Tweet Cart Article in NYT – New Website Resource

For those of you who follow the whole debate around street food in SF….the NYTimes has a great article on the debate.

There is also a new website for the San Francisco Cart Project. The debate centers around whether it is unfair to restaurants who have to abide by city rules and whether these carts are taking away their customers. My take? They should stop whining and get carts of their own! Take the food to the people.

The San Francisco Bay Area is home to a wonderfully innovative local street food culture that is growing extremely quickly through its combination of technology and mobile, sustainable, food. The SF Cart Project seeks to complement the research of people interested in starting, or expanding, a street food business of their own by providing a relevant central resource for documents, information and community awareness regarding the often confusing (and occasionally contradictory) process of starting and running a legal mobile food business in the Bay Area.

Best Fried Calamari in San Francisco?

Who has the best calamari in SF? Would love to hear opinions. Please don’t say Cha-cha-chas. My current favorite is the FRITTO MISTO WITH LEMON, AIOLI AND FRESH HERBS at Pizza Nostra in Potrero Hill. It comes on a wooden cutting board with lemon and sauce. It includes calamari, but also white fish, vegetables, etc. Very delish.

Spendy California Wines Headed for Deep Discounting?

Are you one of the many that believe California wines are over priced? Check out this article which explains some of the price pressures the wine industry is facing. Also, it mentions a site where you can get wine as it is being liquidated as people realize they can’t sell it at the steep prices anymore.

Momofuku Inspired Ramen

I made some Ramen last night for friends who I have not seen in a long time. I got the Momofuku book for my birthday and was inspired. I will get better pictures, this one is off my iphone.

Slow cooked pork with star anise, cloves and ginger
Broth was beef stock, mirin, soy, rice vinegar
Bacon that I broiled and cut up into bits
Napa cabage and carrots
Serrano chiles, cilantro, chives (as toppings)
Lime

We drank a Riesling. Delish.

Starbelly – Good Food in the Castro (?)

Recently went to Starbelly in the Castro. It was really good. Had the chicken liver pate with chutney pictured here. Starbelly is run by the same people as Beretta, I think.

The Pizza Triangle

I keep telling my friends that they live in the “pizza triangle”, but it is actually more of an L shape. Unless you add one in Potrero Hill….then you’ve got the city’s best pizza all withing 2.2 miles of each other.

Food News – San Francisco

Jay’s Deli in Potrero Hill is shuttered, no word as to whether it will reopen or not. You’ll remember that this was the old Klein’s Deli location.

Also, Eliza’s in Potrero Hill closed, which is a bummer. They still have another location, but this one is closed, being replaced by a new Mediterranean restaurant. So no Chinese in Potrero for the most part.

Osha Thai is coming to 3rd and Townsend. Yeah!
